International Mother Language Day

How many languages do you speak? At H-FARM International School Vicenza, we come from 23 different countries!
Every year on 21st February, we celebrate International Mother Language Day, a UNESCO initiative that reminds us of the beauty and importance of linguistic and cultural diversity. This day holds special significance because it allows us to embrace our international community, celebrate our mother tongues, and reflect on how language fosters identity and global understanding.
To mark the occasion, students have taken part in interactive language activities. The day began with class discussions, exploring why language matters and how it shapes our world. This led to language-learning sessions, where students have practiced phrases in their mother tongue or tried a new language, helping them appreciate different linguistic structures.
One of the highlights was a poster creation activity, where students designed visual displays featuring key phrases in their languages. These will be exhibited in the hallways for everyone to see and appreciate. Throughout the day, cross-cultural exchanges encouraged students with students sharing words, songs, or proverbs from their languages, turning the school into a space of multilingual discovery.

The day was also dedicated to the Bring a Book at School initiative. Teachers and staff will contribute to a love of reading display, showcasing books they are reading in different languages, reinforcing the idea that language learning is a lifelong journey. Families were also invited to donate books in their native language, helping to expand our school’s multilingual library.
Through these activities, students celebrated their own linguistic heritage but also gained a deeper appreciation for the diverse cultures within our school community. It was a day to connect, share, and celebrate the power of language!
