Rare Hack for New Ideas with Alexion: winners

Two projects aimed at improving the atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome patient journey were awarded.

Together with Alexion Pharma Italy, part of AstraZeneca, we announce the winners of the "Rare Hack for New Ideas" hackathon for the occasion of World Rare Disease Day 2022. The hackathon was dedicated to finding innovative solutions to address unmet needs for the ultra-rare disease atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS).

Two winning projects were selected from each of the two challenges: accelerating time to diagnosis and recognition of aHUS and improving connections between medical centres and experts.

Winners

  • SERSE (Atypical Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome Electronic Detection System)
A non-invasive in-vitro methodology that consists of the collection and analysis of a urine sample.

  • WelMed
A platform that allows healthcare professionals to facilitate referral to treatment centres, promote a multidisciplinary approach, increase the number and timeliness of diagnoses, and ensure therapeutic appropriateness.

The two winning teams each received €15,000.
