The Museum of Me: A Journey into Identity in PYP1

The Museum of Me: A Journey into Identity in PYP1

The PYP1 learning space was transformed into something truly special: a one-of-a-kind museum. Instead of historical artifacts or ancient treasures, the exhibits on display were deeply personal, carefully selected by the children themselves. This was the Museum of Me, a project that offered a beautiful window into the thoughts, emotions, and stories of our young students.

The idea behind the Museum of Me is simple, yet incredibly meaningful: to give children the opportunity to reflect on who they are, what makes them unique, and how they relate to the world around them. As part of the Unit of Inquiry “Who We Are”, this project invited each student to explore the concept of identity in a tangible and personal way.

Each child became both curator and storyteller, selecting objects, images, drawings, and memories that represent different aspects of their lives. From a favorite toy to a special photograph, from a family drawing to a self-portrait—each item was chosen with care. Some children included a beloved book, a cherished piece of clothing, or even a song that makes them happy. All of these objects were arranged in individual “exhibition spaces,” creating a museum that spoke volumes about the inner richness of our students.

But the project didn’t stop at the display. Each child also presented their museum to their classmates, explaining the reasons behind each choice and what every item says about them. This moment helped develop oral communication and listening skills, while also fostering a classroom culture built on respect, empathy, and curiosity. The children learned to express themselves and, at the same time, to appreciate similarities and differences in others.

For many, it was the first time they had reflected so personally on themselves, and they did so with authenticity, creativity, and confidence. It was also an excellent way to introduce early research and presentation skills—cornerstones of the PYP approach.

Families were invited to visit the Museum of Me and discover these small but powerful personal exhibitions. Seeing the pride in the children’s eyes as they shared their stories was one of the most moving moments. For the adults, it was a touching reminder that even young children already possess a strong sense of self and a deep desire to share their world.

The Museum of Me is much more than a simple school project—it is a celebration of individuality, personal voice, and community. It helps children understand that their identity matters and has value, and that every story deserves to be heard.

Thank you to all the families for accompanying the children on this journey and for taking the time to visit the museum. It was an honor to get to know each student through their own eyes and to celebrate the beautiful diversity of our PYP1 community.
