The Bee-Farm Project: A Story of Commitment and Sustainability Between Sisters

A small yellow house in the middle of the greenery, a barely perceptible buzz, and two sisters who years apart, chose to leave a tangible and living mark on campus: the Bee-Farm Project is back.

This is not “just” a beehive: it’s a generational act, a real handover, a conscious decision to care for our environment, right here where we live every day: at school.

The story begins with Emelie, who launched this innovative project when she was in MYP5. With her entrepreneurial spirit and her passion for nature, she created an initiative that even received an important grant. Her project had a major impact not only on our school, but also on the local community, raising awareness on the importance of bees and environmental sustainability.

After Emelie completed her school journey, the Bee-Farm Project was handed over to her younger sister, Lilian, who decided to bring the project back to life. Unfortunately, the previous winter had severely damaged the hive and the bees had relocated, but Lilian faced this setback with determination, starting again from scratch and adding new elements such as a compost bin and a flower bed for the bees in spring.

Today, the Bee-Farm Project consists of three key elements: a beehive, a compost bin and a flower bed that will be planted next season. These elements are not only essential for creating a more sustainable mini-ecosystem, they also provide valuable learning opportunities for our students. Dedicated learning moments have already been organised to raise awareness on topics such as the role of bees in the environment and the life cycle of a sustainable garden.

Another significant part of the project has been the active involvement of the school: students took part in several fundraising activities, including bake sales and recycling old school uniforms. Thanks to these efforts, around 400 euros were collected to support the project and its activities.

To celebrate this major milestone, our student has organised a short inauguration to thank everyone who contributed to this beautiful initiative, including school leaders, bee-keepers, the marketing team and the students who supported her.

This story reminds us that even a small project carried forward with passion and determination, can grow and thrive, making a difference in our environment and in our community. We are very proud of how our students have brought this to life and we are confident that the Bee-Farm Project will continue to flourish and inspire many more generations of students.
